About Kunal Majumder
Kunāl Majumder is a journalist and press freedom advocate serving as CPJ’s Asia-Pacific Program Coordinator, where he leads advocacy and engagement on journalist safety and press freedom across the region. A journalist since 2006, he has held editorial leadership roles at Tehelka, Rajasthan Patrika, and The Indian Express, and has received the Statesman Award for Rural Reporting and the UNFPA-Laadli Award for Gender Sensitivity. His work on press freedom and journalist safety has earned international recognition, including a Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan (2024–25), where he researched press freedom and public policy and explored the use of AI and augmented reality (AR) in journalist safety training, and selection for the European Union Visitors’ Programme in 2022. He has also taught journalism at Jamia Millia Islamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre and the University of Michigan’s English Department as a guest faculty member, and delivered the 2025 TEDxUofM talk on the vital role of press freedom in protecting fundamental rights. A graduate of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and Sciences Po, Paris, Kunāl holds an MA in Journalism and a BA (Honours) in English Literature, Political Science, and History. He speaks English, Bengali, and Hindi. Since 2013, he has served as a pro bono advisor to Impulse NGO Network’s Model Press Lab, contributing to its work on human rights and social justice.
